Gallery Owners Are 'Thieves,' Sentencing Texas Judge Says
Three years after they pleaded guilty in a $4 million Ponzi scheme, a Texas couple has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. The Houston Chronicle said Jerry Hart, 68, and his wife Wynonne, 64 - once a fixture in Houston high society, with their Hart Galleries auction house - had been accused of holding auctions featuring art and high-end furniture, then never paying customers who sold the goods. A sentencing judge ignored letters from 160 prominent citizens, who asked that the Harts be afforded leniency. Instead, the Chronicle said, state District Judge Randy Roll issued the 14-year sentences, saying the Harts were “thieves.”
